When I see, read or hear about the continued discrimination of an entire class of U.S. citizens I grimace. If you have friends, family or loved ones who are demonized by speech, excluded by law, shunned with a look or by an act, beaten or displaced because of who they date or love you probably recoil whenever you hear about or witness these things too.
Almost everyone cringes at the thought of genocide in Africa, honor killings in the U.S. and abroad, the clubbing of baby seals or a polar bear adrift on a chunk of ice barely big enough to support its weight. Save the whales, seals, polar bears and the Islamic child slaughted by an irate father or brother. Yes, I know. These examples all are about death. And my subject is about the acceptance of gays and their inclusion under the law.
I cited the death examples because most of those who shun the gay community do so because they believe gays are sinners and will inevitably be damn to Hell — a form of spiritual death. I believe that gays are here, in our country, and are deserving of the same rights and privileges as all of our other citizens. Hell, damnation or heavenly promotions are all God’s decisions not mine. All I know is I’m here right now and I refuse to take discriminatory baggage with me to whatever comes next.
I suggest that the federal government scrap the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Affirmative Action and replace those laws with an Equal Rights Act which would include equal pay for equal work and marriage mirror image legal rights for all who enter into committed partnerships or civil unions.
Our current laws protect race, color, religion, sex, national origin and age from discrimination. These are collectively known as “protected classes”.
It is my belief that these separate classifications are what lies at the root of our continued discriminatory practices today. If we keep our citizens divided with the current mindset of protected classes, affirmative action set asides and exclusion of a class with fewer rights our social evolution will never get past these minor speed bumps.

Hasn’t the time come for all U.S. citizens to enjoy equal rights under the law?
I’m against same-sex marriage but I am for same-sex civil unions. Let’s keep the current definition for marriage.
One thing that make our laws constitutional is the equal application of those laws to all citizens.
This is the land of liberty…why are we still confused by the definition of liberty?
